What is Benefit Realisation Management
If you are involved in change and you:
Wonder why change initiatives are failing to deliver on their promises
Want to increase the value delivered from change
Recognise the fundamental difference between delivering capability and delivering value
Want to include a focus on the value that your change delivers
Have seen how some organisations seem to get it right and deliver a lot of value
Have heard of something called benefits management and wondered what it is and if it is right for you
Benefits realisation management - also referred to as benefits management – is an approach to managing and delivering the organisational benefits from change. It is a discipline that has been increasing in prominence. In the UK it featured within Managing Successful Programmes (MSP)
Benefit realisation management is:
A structured approach to the pro-active management of benefits.
It is normally associated with change which is being carried out to deliver benefits and achieve objectives.
It shifts the focus of success of change from capability delivery to business benefits
It distinguishes capability that is being delivered (e.g. the delivery of an IT project with various features) from the resulting benefits that the capability could enable (e.g. improvement in process efficiency).
At its core it comprises a process to identify, define, plan for and realise the benefits from change applied throughout the lifecycle of change and integrated with delivery and change management approaches.
This principle of capability (enabler), benefits and objectives and the relationships is shown below:
IT FEATURE
Capability (Enabler)
IMPROVEMENT IN
PROCESS EFFICIENCY
Benefit
REDUCTION IN RESOURCE
REQUIRED TO SUPPORT
PROCESS
Benefit
REDUCTION IN COSTS
Objective
In this example the IT Feature (capability) could result in an improvement in the efficiency of the process (benefit), which in turn could enable the reduction of resource required to support the process (benefit), which in turn could enable the reduction in costs (objective).
